North Carolina Representative Walter Jones has died on his 76th birthday.

Jones, a Republican who has been in Congress since being elected in 1994, had been in hospice care and was too sick to travel to Washington to be sworn in last month.

According to Politico, “Jones was a staunch social conservative: a strong Catholic who fiercely opposed abortion and gay marriage. But he also had an independent streak that drove him to break ranks with his party more than any other Republican, on issues from campaign finance to the Russia investigation into President Donald Trump.”
