Country Votes to Change Name

The country of Macedonia has voted to rename the country as the Republic of North Macedonia.

The Macedonian parliament agreed to change the name as part of an agreement with Greece, ending a 27-year dispute. The deal was reached in June, but the name change will not come into effect until Greece’s parliament also ratifies the agreement.

Representatives of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE, who opposed the agreement with Greece, boycotted the vote.
