Several people in the Mississippi town of Sardis have complained after a convicted sex offender served as grand marshal of the town’s Christmas parade.
Michael Saripkin presided over the town’s parade last week. He was convicted in Tennessee of sexual battery in 1990 and statutory rape in 1997. In 2013, he was convicted in Mississippi of inappropriately touching a child.
A store owner in the town says that she knew of his past, but said she did not object to his inclusion because he had been a donor to several civic causes and worked to bring businesses to Sardis. The parade is hosted by the Sardis Chamber of Commerce, who did not comment on the incident.
