A man from Las Cruces, New Mexico, was seriously injured and had to be hospitalized after his dog shot him in the back.
Sonny “Tex” Gilligan, 74, says that he was out hunting for jackrabbits with his 3 dogs, Charlie, Scooter, and Cowboy. He was in the driver’s seat of his truck when he says Charlie somehow got his foot caught in the trigger, setting off the shotgun. The gun shot through the driver’s seat, hitting Sonny in the back, breaking several ribs and shattering his collarbone.
At first, he thought he was shot from outside, but quickly realized the situation. He called emergency services, who rushed to bring him to an El Paso, Texas, hospital. Sonny says that he was revived using CPR on the way to the hospital after he had lost a substantial amount of blood.
Gilligan required several surgeries but is expected to recover. He is currently at a rehabilitation center. The dogs were taken to an animal center, but have since been taken back by Gilligan’s son, who says that Charlie is still a “good boy” despite the incident.
