Texas prisons are denying inmates access to dentures because they claim that chewing “isn’t a medical necessity.”
Prisoners without teeth had requested dentures, with many of them being elderly and have a long history of poverty with no healthcare. State policy is strict in its limitations of dentures, saying they only get access if they are underweight or suffering from other medical complications.
Many prisoners have then suffered from bleeding gums and choking due to the lack of teeth. The prison maintains that blending food is sufficient, and they say that they have no plans to review the policy in the future.
