Army Veteran Who Lost His Arms, Drowns While Paddleboarding

Cody Irons, an Army medic veteran who lost his arms following a motorcycle accident in 2015, died Wednesday evening after going out to paddleboard in the Chesapeake Bay.  He left from Annapolis, Maryland, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police Public Information Officer Candy Thomson. Irons was 25.

Irons was featured in several news reports, showcasing his rise from adversity, and he became well known in the local water sports community. Maryland’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told NPR the cause was an accidental drowning.

Irons was with friends in choppy waters when he fell from his paddleboard. An investigation into what happened is ongoing, Thomson said.
