Memes may be Banned under new EU Copyright Law, Opponents say

Digital rights campaigners have voiced concerns over a new proposed EU copyright law.

The opponents to the law say that the wording of the legislation would present the possibility that any content on the internet could be copyright claimed if there is any likeness to existing copyright. They say this could lead to claims against internet memes that, while they’re original works on their own, are based off of other content.

In response to the claims, a European Commission spokesperson said, “The idea behind our copyright proposals is that people should be able to make a living from their creative ideas. The proposals to modernise EU copyright provisions will not harm freedom of expression on the internet. They take into account technological developments that have already been introduced by some of the major players and which help in two ways.”
