Health officials in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, say that the city is experiencing a rare problem after multiple children were born with syphilis.
The 3 children were found to have congenital syphilis, which is when a mother with the condition passes it on to her child. The city had not seen a case since 2012, and overall the condition has been exceptionally rare.
“Children getting syphilis is almost unheard of now in industrialized societies so that’s a problem,” City of Milwaukee interim health commissioner McManus said.
Those who survive being born with the disease can end up with deformed bones, severe anemia, enlarged liver and spleen, or brain and nerve damage.
