DEVELOPING: BP Claims Oil Spill off Australian Coast would be a “Welcome Boost” to the Economy

BP reportedly made a statement in a 2016 environmental plan, saying that an oil spill would be a “welcome boost” to local economies.

The documents originated from a plan submitted to the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority in 2016. The commission responded to BP, asking them to remove several instances of claims that were “unsupported by analysis.”

BP also claimed it had not identified any social impacts that could arise from the event of a diesel spill and “since there are no unresolved stakeholder concerns… BP interprets this event to be socially acceptable”.

The drilling plan, which has since been withdrawn, aimed to drill in a sensitive marine area.
