A man who was hiking Hawaii’s Olomana Trail reportedly fell hundreds of feet to his death on Sunday. He reportedly tried to grab his hat before the fall. This marks the fourth death linked to the dangerous trail since 2011. A co-worker identified the victim as Nathan Stowell, 24.
The victim plunged off Mount Olomana’s third peak, near Kailua, around 10:50 a.m., according to the Honolulu Fire Department.
Firefighters searched through a wooded area and asked a hiker to shake a tree before they found the body just after noon, Fire Captain Kevin Mokulehua said. Stowell’s body was found roughly 400 feet below the hiking trail, where he was pronounced dead.
The Olomana Trail is a strenuous 4.5-mile rocky path spread across three different mountainous peaks, according to SummitPost.org.
