A 10-month-old puppy has died after a flight attendant repeatedly insisted its owner put it in the overhead bin during a United Airlines Flight.

The flight travelled from Houston to New York, where upon landing it was discovered that the puppy had died. According to witnesses, the flight attendant told the owner multiple times to put the carrier with the dog inside into the overhead compartment, despite her rejections. Eventually the owner did comply, wrongly believing that there must be air circulation in the overhead.

“We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them,” United said in a statement issued Tuesday. “We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again.”
