A ferry carrying what is believed to be 50 people is missing in Kiribati. New Zealand and Fiji authorities are involved in the search for the missing boat.
The ferry left on January 18th and was making a two-day trip from the island of Nonouti. The boat did not arrive on time and is still missing a week later. Aerial surveillance is being used to narrow down the search area.
The ferry is a 17.5m wooden catamaran and reportedly had problems with its propeller shaft before leaving. “This may have contributed to problems navigating the journey,” according to an official on the scene. The water was reported to have some swells at the time of the disappearance.
The New Zealand Air Force recently asked that boats have the proper communications equipment after rescuing a group of fisherman in October.
