DEVELOPING: Military Lockdown at Popular Tourist City in Jamaica

Travellers into the popular tourist city Montego Bay, Jamaica, are being asked to exercise extreme caution after a state of emergency was declared in the area.

The declaration comes after an extreme spike in violent crimes in the area. This prompted the government to issue a state of emergency and send military personnel into the area. The Canadian government has issued a travel warning to their citizens travelling there.

“Under the state of emergency, security forces will have “extraordinary powers and some rights will be suspended,” said Prime Minister Andrew Holness, “This does not mean that use of these extraordinary powers can be arbitrary or are beyond review. The security forces are expected and have been directed to treat citizens with respect and protect the dignity and safety of all.” (source) 12:37 p.m. ET January 19, 2018
