A federal judge has ruled against former Maricopa County, Arizona, sheriff Joe Arpaio in his quest to have the record of his criminal conviction erased, according to local media.
Judge Susan Bolton “already dismissed the criminal contempt case against Arpaio following the decision by President Trump to issue a pardon,” but Bolton says that the pardon does not also mean he gets the conviction erased.
“The power to pardon is an executive prerogative of mercy, not of judicial record-keeping, the pardon undoubtedly spared defendant from any punishment that might otherwise have been imposed, it did not, however, revise the historical facts of this case,” Bolton wrote.
Arpaio says he will appeal the decision.
