BEIRUT (ALBOENEWS)  —  Syrian troops and allies have reached the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, breaking an Islamic State stronghold there that has lasted nearly three years, according to AP News. Islamic State defenses in Syria’s largest eastern city have now collapsed.

President Bashar Assad’s troops have been advancing on several fronts to break the siege by IS and insurgent groups for the past year. Syrian troops with help from Russia have been working to take it back. Deir el-Zour is an area rich in oil.
