PHOENIX, ARIZONA (ALBOENEWS)— Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was convicted Monday of criminal contempt for ignoring a judge’s orders.
The conviction stems from Arpaio ignoring a judge’s orders in 2012 to halt traffic patrols that targeted immigrants. In Monday’s decision handed down by U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton, the judge wrote that Arpaio showed “flagrant disregard” for the court’s orders.
Arpaio faces up to six months in prison, which would be determined at his sentencing hearing on October 5th. Arpaio’s attorney states that they will appeal the decision in order to get a trial by jury.
